Teaching Qualities

Enthusiasm Be enthusiastic about your work and the music to be performed. It should be genuine, arising from honest feelings and not contrived.

Sensitivity Be sensitive to the personal needs of the student. Understanding empathy is preferred over sympathy as you deal with student problems.

Impartial Endeavor to be impartial and fair in dealings with all students.

Qualifications Be prepared and seek to grow and improve in your teaching and awareness of student needs and problems.

Organization Personal and professional organization are a must if you want "free time" to do the creative aspects of your work. Accomplishment of the detail needed to present programs and prepare for classes should be achieved with a minimum amount of intrusion on time that should be available for students.

Music Music should be chosen from mainstream literature available for the performing medium. Care should be taken in the parochial system to avoid making choices in music which might be misconstrued as approval for that which might be detrimental to the students who participate and for audiences which attend.

Expectations Have reasonable expectations for both your students and yourself. Approach your work in a relaxed and efficient manner. Keep a proper perspective as to how your program should function in relation to other academic areas and the school program at large.

Activities Schedule meaningful performances and activities for your students and groups. Avoid commitments which are not significant and which tend to detract from the primary thrust of significant appearances by the groups. Do not over schedule your groups to the detriment of their personal and academic activities.
